Fine if you're an established researcher who can afford to try something new but if you're just building your portfolio???Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7961882.post-1155892604277305992006-08-18T09:16:00.000+00:002006-08-18T09:16:00.000+00:00I think that PLoS ONE will be beneficial not only ...I think that PLoS ONE will be beneficial not only to scientists and doctors but also to other fields of study. According to Dr. Surridge PLoS ONE is a faster and more efficient way of publishing papers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7961882.post-1151060091551394492006-06-23T10:54:00.000+00:002006-06-23T10:54:00.000+00:00Hi Joe,Thanks for the comment. It's true I did struggle to come up with an accurate description of PLoS ONE, but I did deliberately not call it a journal but a "next-generation publishing system" and an "open access online repository".

And in describing it as a service (not journal) for researchers in biology and medicine I was conscious that the PLoS ONE press release refers only to those two subject areas. Moreover, in the interview Chris Surridge points out that since PLoS' reputation lies in biology and medicine it is in these two areas that he expects to receive submissions, certainly in the early stages.

I agree I could have mentioned that PLoS ONE will also include things like post-publication peer review, interactivity, personalisation tools etc., but long introductions are not ideal, and I had hoped that the title (Open Access: Stage Two) would signal that the interview was a discussion about something new and different.Richard Poynderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05433823131339077354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7961882.post-1151031465175739122006-06-23T02:57:00.000+00:002006-06-23T02:57:00.000+00:00Your lead-in for this interview is pretty grossly ...Your lead-in for this interview is pretty grossly misleading: the point of PLoS ONE is that it is not restricted to medicine and biology. The way you phrase it makes it sound like PLoS ONE is a subject-specific journal in the traditional sense, an impression that your interviewee takes exceedingly great pains to disabuse throughout the interview. A casual reader scanning the introduction might not take the effort to discover what the actual nature of PLoS ONE, and would thus leave that transaction even more ignorant than they began.Joe Ardenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10382496751330191000noreply@blogger.com
